Our History
Founded in 1969 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, NABVETS was created by African American veterans returning from the Vietnam War who recognized the need to address inequality in access to veterans’ benefits, services, and recognition. From those early beginnings, NABVETS has grown into a powerful nationwide network of chapters united by a shared mission: to serve, support, and advocate for veterans and their families while building stronger communities for future generations.
To advocate for and support Black veterans by promoting unity, protecting their rights, and ensuring access to benefits, opportunities, and leadership within their communities.
To build a future where Black veterans are fully recognized, empowered, and supported in every area of life — including healthcare, housing, education, employment, and civic leadership.
